Installing the VSA 10 agent on a Linux or Raspbian device

NOTE  The following steps are optional. They are helpful to know in situations where your endpoint may not be able to perform the wget step described in the next section of this article.

To download the VSA 10 Agent, perform the following steps:

1. From the left navigation menu in VSA 10, navigate to Onboarding > Downloads.
   

2. Click the download link of the installer that corresponds with your endpoint's operating system.

   

3. Depending on the device type selected, you may be prompted to select the Organization, Site, and Agent Group with which the download corresponds. These values are required for VSA 10 to build the installer. When you're ready to proceed, click Download.

   

4. Once the agent installer has compiled, you can download it to your current computer, or you can copy the link to share with customers or technicians via email.

   

To install the Linux agent on the endpoint, perform the following steps:

1. Launch the Linux Terminal or an SSH shell.

2. If you've already downloaded the agent via the VSA 10 portal, skip ahead to step 5 in this section of the article.

3. Run the uname -m command to determine if the endpoint is using 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.

   • 32-bit devices will return a result that contains i686 or i386.

   • 64-bit devices will return x86_64.

4. Use the wget command to download the installer that corresponds with your architecture:

   • 32-bit installer: wget https://slv.vsax.net/download/vsax_x86.deb

   • 64-bit installer: wget https://slv.vsax.net/download/vsax_x64.deb

5. Once the file transfer completes, start the applicable installation process:

   • For Debian-based Linux distributions:

     • 32-bit OS: sudo dpkg -i vsax_x86.deb

     • 64-bit OS: sudo dpkg -i vsax_x64.deb

   • For RPM-based Linux distributions:

     • 32-bit OS: sudo rpm -ivh vsax_x86.rpm

     • 64-bit OS: sudo rpm -ivh vsax_x64.rpm

6. Next, register the agent with your VSA 10 instance by issuing the vsax-registration command.

   When configuring without a proxy, you'll be prompted to complete the following fields:

   When configuring with a proxy, you'll receive these prompts:

   If the registration process ends in an error state, you can find and review the logged event by using the following grep command:

   user@hostname:~$ cat /var/log/*|grep -rin vsax-registration
   syslog:11685:2023-12-15T09:08:27.889879-06:00 vsax-registration: Failed to register using 2FA

   NOTE  The executable should already be added to your system index, enabling you to run it without calling the full path. If that doesn't work, you can find it in the /usr/sbin/ directory.

7. Once you've entered your username and password, a Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) QR code and URL will render in the terminal window. Scan the QR code or copy the link into your web browser to complete the registration process. If your terminal doesn't support the display of QR codes, you'll only see the link.
   

8. Use the service start vsax command to ensure that the VSA 10 service is started.

9. If you need to make specific configuration changes to the VSA agent on the system, you can use your preferred application to edit /etc/vsax/config.xml to your requirements. Once you've done so, use the service stop vsax command to load the new configuration file.

If you need to uninstall the agent, you can do so as follows:

IMPORTANT  Add sudo in front of each command if you are not carrying out this workflow as an administrator.
